Overview

Kamadgiri Parikrama is the most sacred and most important pilgrimage ritual of Chitrakoot, performed around the holy Kamadgiri Hill (Kamadgiri Parvat) in Chitrakoot district, Uttar Pradesh. Kamadgiri is believed to be a living form of Lord Kamtanath (Lord Rama), the presiding deity of Chitrakoot, and walking the 5 km circular Parikrama Marg around this forested hill is considered one of the most meritorious acts a devotee can perform.

The parikrama holds deep religious significance rooted in the Ramayana. It is believed that Lord Rama, Mata Sita, and Lakshmana spent a major part of their fourteen-year exile at Kamadgiri. According to popular belief and the writings of Goswami Tulsidas in the Ramcharitmanas, this hill is so holy that its circumambulation and darshan wash away sins and fulfil the heartfelt wishes of devotees — which is why the deity is called "Kamtanath," the fulfiller of desires.

The Parikrama Marg is a roughly 5 km paved circular path that stays cool under a canopy of ancient Banyan, Peepal, and Neem trees. Most pilgrims walk the entire route barefoot as a mark of humility and devotion, while especially devout followers perform the "Dandavat Parikrama," measuring the full distance by repeatedly prostrating on the ground. The walk usually takes one to two hours, depending on pace and the number of temple stops along the way.

The path is lined with a continuous string of temples, ashrams, and shrines — including the famous Bharat Milap Temple, believed to be the spot where the emotional reunion of Lord Rama and Bharat took place. Along the circuit, the sound of bhajans, temple bells, and chanting of "Kamtanath ki Jai" fills the air, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere unmatched anywhere else in Chitrakoot.

The main Kamtanath Temple stands at Gate No. 1 of the parikrama, and devotees traditionally begin their circuit after taking a holy dip at Ramghat on the Mandakini River. Early morning is considered the most auspicious and comfortable time for the parikrama, when the path is peaceful, the weather is cool, and the spiritual energy is at its peak.

Whether you are on a pilgrimage to Chitrakoot Dham or seeking a meaningful spiritual experience, the Kamadgiri Parikrama offers the perfect blend of devotion, mythology, natural shade, and tranquillity. It remains the spiritual heart of Chitrakoot and a must-do for every visitor.

If you are in Omkareshwar, then must plan for Parikrama six kms distance needs two and half hours. Covers most important temples such as Hanumanji, maa Annapurna, Shri Shankaracharya statue, very ancient Siddhnath Mahadev Temple. The road is in very good condition making your walking easily even if you are barefoot.

Distinctly marked and with inscriptions on the entire route this Prakrima route is uniquely enthralling. Plenty of temples on the route make passage during walk engaging. Langurs, often ask for eatables in a very human way. Sometimes holding on to the feet. Tea stalls and local hutments on the way make passage safe in the thickly forested areas. Markings show this as a 5km hike, locals mention it as 7 km. It requires a bit of physical fitness especially due to stairways and undulations. Very pleasing sights and sounds on the way.

Parikrama path is a well led trail of 7 kms covering the Island. The path goes through several Ashrams and temple. The path leads to the sangam of river Narmada and the recently inaugurated Adi Shankaracharya statue. On the path you may encounter monkeys, there are straight, steps and some mud road. One needs to be in good endurance to complete the Parikrama. You find small shops selling water can for sangam and some shops selling souvenirs.
